Monoethylene glycol is a colorless, odorless and barely
viscous liquid which is miscible in water, aldehydes and alcohols and many
other organic compounds. It is an organic compound used primarily as a raw
material in the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate resins (PET) that are
used in bottling and polyester fibers used in the fabric industry. It cannot
dissolve heavy petroleum and vegetable oils, cellulose acetate and rubber.
Monoethylene glycol is low volatile and hygroscopic compared to glycerol at
room temperature. Ethylene glycol in its pure form is a colorless liquid with
sweet taste. Ethylene glycol production is carried out from ethylene through
the intermediate ethylene oxide.

It is a building block, which is
used for applications that require solvent couplers, humectants and chemical
intermediates, for resins and freezing point depression solvents. These
applications make it applicable to manufacture wide range of products that
include heat transfer fluids, resins, electrolytic capacitors, latex paints and
emulsifiers, automotive antifreeze and coolants among others. Chemical
intermediate for resins are used in manufacture of fibers, films and
containers, adhesives, synthetic rubbers and enamels among others. Solvent
coupler is used as stabilizer in gel formation and in water based formulations
such as latex paints, adhesives and more. Solvent is used as medium for
suspending conductive salt in electrolytic capacitors. Humectants are used in
paper, textile fibers, adhesives and leather among others.
Monoethylene glycol is also used in
manufacture of some vaccines, but it is not present itself in these injections.
Diethylene glycol (DEG) is a colorless by-product from ethylene glycol and that
is used in the printing ink industry, as a raw material for production of PU
systems and as an ingredient for detergents. Moreover, it is also used in the
natural gas industry for removal of water vapour from natural gas and to
prevent formation of ice plugs, which create blockage of pipeline that can lead
to safety concerns.
Some of the factors driving the
monoethylene glycol market include the rising demand for polyester fibres,
which have applications in textile industry. Moreover, polyethylene
terephthalate (PET) is also expected to fuel demand for monoethylene glycol in
the near future.
Monoethylene glycol has been
considered hazardous under the Global Harmonized System (GHS) on classification
and Labelling for health effects, which act as a restraint for growth of
monoethylene glycol in the market. Intentional or accidental ingestion of
monoethylene glycol in humans have caused poisoning and may also lead to death.
Mild exposure by means of oral, skin or inhalation causes irritation to skin,
eyes and respiratory tract. Repeated exposure to monoethylene glycol may affect
the kidney, as the kidney is the primary target organ for toxicity. Moreover,
vomiting, dizziness, central nervous system depressions and abdominal pain are
some symptoms that are caused by exposure to monoethylene glycol.
Some of the key players in the
monoethylene glycol market include : Shell, SABIC, Honam Petrochemical Corp –
(HPC), The Kuwait Olefins Co, Reliance Industries Ltd, Formosa Plastics Corp,
SINOPEC, Huntsman Corp, Dow Chemical Co, TOC Glycol Company Limited, Alberta
&, Orient Glycol and Indorama Ventures (Oxide & Glycols), Ltd among
others.
