Drill pipe is a hollow, thick walled
pipe used for carrying out horizontal drilling to facilitate the
drilling process on a wellbore. A single length drill pipe comprises a
hollow tube typically long in height with considerable wall thickness
and a tool joint connection at both ends. Since drill pipe is subjected

The manufacturing process of the drill
pipe consists of two stages. The first stage is called as forming and
is performed by pipe mills whereas the second phase finishing is
typically performed by processors. In forming process starting raw
material utilized is a solid steel billet. Green tube used is typically
manufactured by high temperature processes to form a central cavity in
the billet. In the rotary process, a heated billet is grouped by angled
rolls that cause the billet to revolve over the piercer point forming a
hole through the billet’s length. In the extrusion phase, the billet is
hot punch pierced and is then extruded axially with the help of a die
and a mandrel, forming a hollow shell. In the process a hollow shell is
produced and is then rolled with the help of a fixed plug inside the
shell to decrease the wall thickness and extends the length. The shell
is then rolled again in a sizing mill where it is formed into a round
shape and is sized to the specified diameter.
Subsequently to the forming phase, the
green tube is transferred to a processor where it undergoes for
finishing phase in which the pipe is heated, inspected and is
straightened. All drill pipes are heat treated by its full length after
upsetting. Typically, the nature of the heat treatment is dependent on
the grade of the pipe and involves a combination of tempering, quenching
and normalizing. Heat treatments for drill pipe are carried out by the
specified standards of API.

The drill pipe tube manufacturing
process is completed with the help of a welding through a tool joint
attached to the each end of the drill pipe tube using rotational
friction. The pin is then attached to one end of the drill pipe tube and
at the other end a box is attached. In friction welding, the heat for
welding is generated by pressuring a piece of metal against another
piece, which is then rotated at high speed.
The drill pipe with tool joint
undergoes an additional heat treatment using a polymer rather than water
as quenching agent provides a gradual cooling process. Drill pipe is
machined smooth and is inspected using a range of tests that vary
